TIA Portal crashed while importing HMI tags

David · PLC Sidecar author

While importing HMI tags the whole TIA Portal crashed. An unsaved block and watch-table import was gone and the project was locked for two minutes. This must not happen again.

Cause: one tag had its data type written in a form TIA does not expect (the string length inside the type name). TIA returned an error and right after that the process disappeared.

Fix:

  • The app checks HMI tags before importing and rejects such entries.
  • It saves the project before every HMI import, so a crash no longer wipes anything.
  • It watches whether TIA is alive: instead of a silent "no project" it reports "TIA crashed" and reconnects to the project after a restart.

From the same series: SCL does not allow reserved words (such as Version) as variable names. TIA only reports it during import, so a whole round is lost. The app now checks for them up front.
